Most itineraries begin and end in Arusha, which is considered the safari capital of the country. It’s a great option for travelers who want both adventure and independence.
Is it safe to do a self, drive safari in Tanzania?
Self, drive safaris in Tanzania can be safe if you are well, prepared and follow park regulations. Roads in national parks can be rough, so a 4×4 vehicle and some off, road driving confidence are essential. It’s important to plan your routes carefully and avoid driving after dark, especially in remote areas. Wildlife encounters are thrilling, but you must always keep a safe distance and stay inside your vehicle. With proper planning and awareness, it can be a very rewarding and secure experience.
What kind of vehicle is best for a self, drive safari?
A reliable 4×4 vehicle is the best choice for a self, drive safari in Tanzania. The terrain in places like the Serengeti and Ngorongoro can be challenging, especially during the rainy season. Vehicles with good ground clearance and strong suspension make a big difference in comfort and safety. Many travelers opt for a Land Cruiser or similar safari, ready vehicle equipped with a pop, up roof for better wildlife viewing. Having GPS, spare tires, and basic tools is also highly recommended.
Do I need to book accommodation in advance?
Yes, it’s highly recommended to book your accommodations in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. Lodges and camps inside popular parks like the Serengeti can fill up quickly. Planning ahead ensures you have a place to stay near the best wildlife areas. It also helps you structure your driving distances and daily routes more efficiently. Even in quieter months, advance booking reduces stress and allows you to focus on enjoying your safari.
What should I pack for a 12, day self, drive safari?
Packing wisely can make your self, drive safari much more comfortable and enjoyable. Bring lightweight clothing in neutral colors, along with a warm layer for early mornings and evenings. It’s also helpful to carry snacks, a first, aid kit, and offline maps for navigation in remote areas.
