Main historical facts
As you may already know, Uganda was inhabited in ancient times by a few kingdoms. These were the prehistoric kingdoms of Bantu and Bahima. However, it is said that the first settlers of the area belonged to the Manaseh tribe who settled here 2,000 years ago. Some time later, the kingdoms of Buganda and Bunyoro were developed. Later came the Atekers and the Arabs. Then who showed up? Well, the British explorers and the Catholic missionaries.
Around 1890 England dominated the area of Uganda and Kenya and completely occupied the territory, making it a British protectorate. After a long time under this system, in 1962 it celebrated its independence with Benedict Kiwanuka at the helm and in 1967 the traditional kingdoms were abolished. The next few decades were characterized by the dictatorship of Milton Obote followed by the more moderate presidency of Yoweri Museveni in 1986; but in that span of time, precisely in 1971, Obote was ousted from the government in a military coup led by the commander of the armed forces, Idi Amin Dada, who declared himself president, dissolved parliament and violated human rights. Did you know that this period was referred to as the Reign of Terror? Yes, as 100,000 Ugandans were killed at that time.
