Mafia Island Travel Guide

Mafia Island lies south of Zanzibar, off the mouth of the Rufiji River. From the 12th to the 14th centuries, it was an important settlement during the period when the Shirazis ruled much of the East African coast. However, by the time the Portuguese arrived at the beginning of the 16th century, the island had lost much of its former importance and had become part of the territory ruled by the King of Kilwa.

Today, little remains above ground of the former Shirazi settlement, although pottery shards and coins can occasionally be found along the shore, where the sea is gradually eroding the ruins south of Kilindoni. On the nearby island of Juani, you can find the extensive remains of Kua, a much later town dating from the 18th century, although its history stretches back as far as the 14th century

The principal ruins here are the remains of five mosques. The town was destroyed by raiders from Madagascar in the early 19th century, when the entire settlement was sacked and its inhabitants were reportedly killed by the invaders.

Today, Mafia Island is covered with coconut palms and cashew trees, many of which were established by the Omanis during their Zanzibari heyday. However, the island’s soil is poor, and it has never been able to support a large population.

These days, Mafia is better known as a resort island, particularly for deep-sea fishing and underwater diving. It is a superb destination for both, with a 200-metre-deep trough running along the seabed approximately one kilometre off the island’s western shoreline. This unique underwater environment provides a habitat for a vast variety of marine species.

The finest coral formations can be found around the small islands scattered near Mafia Island. Among the best are the Okuto and Tutia reefs, located around Juani and Jibondo Islands near Chole Bay. The area is renowned for its rich marine life and exceptional underwater scenery, making it an ideal destination for diving and snorkeling.

Mafia Island is also notable as a favourite breeding ground for giant sea turtles, which come ashore on the white coral sands to lay their eggs. They do this mainly on the uninhabited islands of Shungumbili, Burukini and Nyororo. Unfortunately, turtle numbers have declined drastically in recent years.

Even today, you are unlikely to meet many travellers who have visited Mafia Island. The reasons are simple: accommodation can be expensive and reaching the island can sometimes involve complicated transport arrangements.
