Frequently Asked Questions

Where can you track chimpanzees in Tanzania?

Chimpanzee tracking in Tanzania mainly takes place in the remote western parks of Gombe Stream National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park. These areas are located along the shores of Lake Tanganyika and are known for their lush forests and incredible biodiversity. Gombe is famous for its history of chimpanzee research, while Mahale offers a more secluded and wild experience. Both parks require a bit more effort to reach, often involving flights and boat transfers. However, the journey is part of the adventure and well worth it.

What is chimpanzee tracking like?

Chimpanzee tracking is an active and exciting experience that involves hiking through forest trails. You’ll follow experienced guides who track the chimps based on sounds, nests, and movements. The trek can take anywhere from one to several hours, depending on where the chimpanzees are. Once you find them, you’ll spend time observing their behavior up close. It’s a powerful and unforgettable wildlife encounter that feels very personal.

Is chimpanzee tracking difficult?

Chimpanzee tracking can be physically demanding, but it is manageable for most people with a moderate level of fitness. The terrain in places like Mahale Mountains National Park can be steep and forested. Hikes may involve climbing, walking on uneven ground, and dealing with humidity. Guides usually adjust the pace to suit the group. While it can be challenging, the reward of seeing chimpanzees in the wild makes it worthwhile.

What is the best time to go chimpanzee tracking?

The best time for chimpanzee tracking is during the dry season from June to October. During this period, forest trails are easier to navigate and chimpanzees are often easier to locate. However, the green season from November to May offers lush scenery and fewer visitors. In some cases, chimps may stay closer to lower slopes during the wet season, making sightings quicker. Both seasons have their advantages depending on your preference.

What should I bring for chimpanzee tracking?

Packing the right gear is important for a comfortable experience. You should bring sturdy hiking boots, lightweight long-sleeved clothing, and a rain jacket. Insect repellent and sunscreen are also essential in forest environments. A small backpack with water and snacks will help during the trek. Don’t forget your camera, but be ready to enjoy the moment beyond the lens.
